Monthly Ideas and Projects - September 2011

Summer is almost over...
As I type this it's Labor Day and the summer is officially history very soon. Back to school time. Time to reflect and learn from our past accomplishments (and failures). Take the best of it all and use that knowledge to do better the next time around. Strive to learn something new every day!

Occupancy Indicators

Tice Industries, Inc.
Monthly Ideas & Projects - November 2010

Occupancy Indicators

While collaborating in the early 90’s, John Tice and Dale Garrett of Contract Hardware, Inc. had no idea that their little experiment to build a lock indicator would expand into a cottage industry and become an ADA requirement. Tice Industries has designed, engineered and manufactured tens of thousands of indicators for most every major (and a few minor) mortise lock brands. In this process we have learned what works and we stand behind our product 100%. Do you have a special project that requires a lock indicator? Let us provide you with a part that will stand the test of time. Whether its a custom material and finish, or a completely new design like currently installed in the Wynn Encore in Las Vegas, we will make it work.

We offer half a dozen current models depending on which lock is specified. Manufacturers’ locks solutions include Accurate, Best Lock, Corbin/Russwin, Cal Royal, Dorma, Hager, Falcon, Marks, Sargent, Schlage and Yale. If you have a mortise case with a thumb-turn hub, we’ll offer a solution.

We are a specialized manufacturing facility that produces high-quality, architectural door hardware from the finest materials. Our experience ensures that your dreams can, and will, be realized. We are the people to see when you are looking for that special job. We enjoy a challenge. Our CAD-CAM manufacturing facility can produce the most challenging projects from concept to completion.

Tice Industries has been manufacturing commercial builders’ hardware since 1947. Now in our third generation and going strong, we strive to provide a quality product that will stand the test of time. Whether it’s standard commercial door hardware or custom residential builders’ hardware, Tice Industries can handle it!

Portland’s Historic Union Station
Portland, Oregon

Contractor: P & C Construction
Architect: Architectural Resources Group, Inc.

We’re proud to announce that Tice will be part of the team refurbishing Portland’s historic Union Station! Our scope will be all hardware related, focusing on the Crash Bars on the Bronze doors on the main entrance and vestibules.

The initial design for the station was created in 1882 by McKim, Mead, and White. Had the original plan been built, the station would have been the largest train station in the world. A smaller plan was introduced by architects Van Brunt & Howe, and accepted in 1885. Construction of the station began in 1890. It was built by Northern Pacific Terminal Company at a cost of $300,000, and opened on February 14, 1896. The signature piece of the structure is the 50 ft. tall Romanesque clock tower. The "Go By Train" neon sign was added to it after World War II. The station was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975

Tools of the Trade

The modern fabrication shop utilizes a myriad of tools... from mundane hammers and screwdrivers to sophisticated CNC machine tools. We try to purchase the best we can possibly afford when it comes to our tooling... quality tools that will last many years with proper use and maintenance. Most of the brands we choose to buy are made right here in the USA by hard working folks who are proud of what they produce; brands such as Miller, KURT, OSG, Wilson, duMont, Di-Acro, Uni-Punch, Haas Automation, Predator Software, Stephen Bader, Slater, and Accu-Trak, just to name a few. We will continue to support domestic manufacturers because we know they are just like us, and we need to stick together during these tough times.
